In a career of over three decades, perhaps half of which has been involved with technological and business
transformation, I have become convinced that there are three aspects which are critical to the success of any major
transformation
- Understanding the business drivers for change and being clear where technology can enable the desired end result and,
crucially, where it can become an inhibitor to success
- Knowing how the numbers - staff levels, balance sheets, and so on - will work over the life
of the transformation project and beyond.
- Ensuring that the people aspect of transformation is not under-estimated, whether it be limited to planning how change
will be deployed or a more fundamental culture change programme.

Of all the letters and emails I've had from colleagues, staff and customers,
this most accurately reflects what I've tried so hard to achieve in all my Business Transformation work.
The people side is, in my opinion, both the most important part and the part hardest to master; it separates
those of us who can breathe new life into a business in a sustainable way from the crowd.
